Justin Ryan has appeared in opera and concert with companies across the United States, earning critical acclaim for his “commanding presence” (Opera News) and singing of “tremendous sympathy and charisma” (New York Classical Review). Ryan made a recent company debut in Fervaal with the American Symphony Orchestra at Lincoln Center, and returned this spring to Avery Fisher Hall as the Father in the Little Orchestra Society’s production of Hansel and Gretel. Previously at Lincoln Center with the Little Orchestra Society, he appeared in a pair of operettas by Victor Herbert, as Etienne Grandet in Naughty Marietta and as Prince Franz in Sweethearts. A successful interpreter of operatic roles ranging from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Count Almaviva, to romantic roles in works by Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini, Ryan’s performed with Sarasota Opera, Hunter Symphony Orchestra, Toledo Opera, Longview Opera, Belleayre Music Festival, Vertical Repertory Opera, New York Grand Opera, and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, and toured in the title role of Rossini’s Il Signor Bruschino in educational outreach with the Metropolitan Opera.
Ryan makes house debuts in concert this season with Opera Columbus, performing the works of Mozart, Rossini, Boito and Copland, and in concert with Mississippi Opera, performing the works of Rossini, Bizet, Puccini, and Verdi. Ryan’s repertoire in oratorio and concert includes Handel’s Messiah, Brahms’ German Requiem, Faure Requiem, Schubert’s Mass in G, Mozart’s Requiem, and David Diamond’s This Sacred Ground as performed in recent seasons with the Vox Ama Deus ensemble of Philadelphia, the Long Bay Symphony, the New Amsterdam Symphony, Hunter Symphony Orchestra, and the Little Orchestra Society of New York. Ryan can be heard as a recording artist on Evan Mack’s Angel of the Amazon, released to critical acclaim in 2012 on Albany Records, and as the featured soloist in composer Tim Brown’s collection of songs based on the poetry of Pablo Neruda, Luces y Sombras (Songs of Light, Songs of Shadow), available on Capstone Records. Ryan’s voice has been broadcast on New York City radio in the New York Lottery Mega Millions ‘Modern Major General’ advertising campaign. The Los Angeles native was raised in San Antonio, Texas, is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, and resides in New York City.
