A fully staged production of Richard Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde sung in German with English subtitles, presented in collaboration with Connecticut Lyric Opera.
–
Widely acknowledged as one of the pinnacles of the operatic repertoire, the influential Tristan und Isolde is notable for Wagner’s use of chromaticism, tonal ambiguity, orchestral color and harmonic suspension. More than a century and a half after it was composed, it’s nevertheless music of unsettling energy and magnetism. With this one work, Wagner exposed the expanse of his imagination and ensured that music would nevermore be the same. Wagner is reaching back to the Middle Ages for its material – Tristan cast its tall shadow far into the future.
