On June 19th, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the end of slavery - more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That day became known as Juneteenth, a turning point in the long journey toward freedom and justice for African Americans. When Connecticut Lyric Opera set the dates for this year’s production of Amistad, we did so with deep intention - to honor Juneteenth, our nation’s recognition of emancipation and the enduring struggle for freedom. This ground-breaking opera, composed by Pulitzer Prize-winner Anthony Davis, tells the extraordinary true story of the 1839 uprising aboard the slave ship La Amistad, led by the courageous Mende captives who refused to accept enslavement. Their journey began with their capture in Africa, surged forward with their revolt at sea, and unfolded here in Connecticut - a story that still resonates powerfully with us today. We are proud to have launched this journey with a moving Opening Night in New London. The standing ovation and community dialogue that followed reminded us just how vital this story is.Now, we invite you to join us as Amistad comes to Hartford and New Haven this weekend:🎭 Friday, June 20 at 7:30 PM📍 Wadsworth Atheneum's Avery Theater, Hartford🎟️ www.eventbrite.com/e/amistad-an-opera-by-anthony-davis-hartford-tickets-1373940676549🎭 Saturday, June 21 at 7:30 PM📍 United Church on the Green, New Haven🎟️ www.eventbrite.com/e/amistad-an-opera-by-anthony-davis-new-haven-tickets-1373953615249Each performance will be followed by a community conversation about why the Amistad story matters — now more than ever.We hope you’ll join us in this celebration of resilience, remembrance, and the power of telling our stories. In solidarity and song,Connecticut Lyric Opera ...
